Activity 1: The Paper Bridge Engineering Challenge (Ages 4–10)

Give your child five sheets of A4 paper, a roll of tape, and a challenge: build a bridge between two stacks of books that can hold a small toy car. This deceptively simple challenge introduces structural engineering principles — compression, tension, triangulation — in a way that is completely accessible to young children.

For younger children aged four to six, focus on the building experience and celebrate every attempt. For older children aged seven to ten, introduce the challenge of maximising the weight the bridge can hold before it collapses, then ask them to analyse why it failed and redesign accordingly.

This activity develops spatial reasoning, structural thinking, persistence, and the engineering design cycle — all in under 30 minutes.


Activity 2: Density Tower Science Experiment (Ages 5–10)

Fill a tall glass jar with equal layers of honey, dish soap, water coloured with food colouring, vegetable oil, and rubbing alcohol. Watch as the liquids settle into distinct layers — a visual demonstration of density that never fails to astonish children.

For a more advanced version, challenge your child to predict which layer each liquid will settle in before pouring. Then discuss why their predictions were right or wrong. This introduces the concept of scientific hypothesis and observation in a completely accessible format.

Extend the activity by carefully dropping small objects into the jar — a grape, a raisin, a small bolt — and observing which layer each object rests in.

Activity 3: DIY Volcano Chemistry (Ages 4–8)

The classic baking soda and vinegar volcano remains one of the most effective chemistry demonstrations for young children because it is dramatic, repeatable, and immediately comprehensible.

Beyond the basic reaction, extend the learning by asking children to vary the quantities and observe how the reaction changes. How much vinegar produces the biggest eruption? What happens if you add dish soap to the vinegar? This simple extension transforms a demonstration into a genuine scientific investigation.

For an engineering twist, challenge your child to build a container for the volcano using clay or playdough, designing drainage systems and structural walls — combining chemistry and engineering in a single project.

Activity 4: Shadow Engineering (Ages 4–7)

On a sunny day or with a strong torch, challenge your child to build a structure that creates a specific shadow shape — a square, a letter of their name, or the silhouette of an animal. This activity develops spatial reasoning, geometry awareness, and creative problem-solving in a way that feels more like magic than learning.

The challenge scales naturally with age: younger children can work on basic shapes, while older children can attempt more complex silhouettes or compete to see whose structure
creates the most recognisable shadow.


Activity 5: Build a Water Filter (Ages 7–10)

This is a more involved activity with a genuine wow factor. Using a plastic bottle cut in half, fill the top portion with alternating layers of gravel, sand, cotton wool, and activated charcoal. Pour muddy water through the top and observe how each layer filters out different impurities.

This activity introduces water science, environmental chemistry, and engineering filtration — concepts that are genuinely important in the real world and that children find deeply satisfying to understand. Discuss where clean water comes from, how municipal water treatment works, and why access to clean water is one of the world's most important engineering challenges.

Activity 6: Simple Circuit with a Battery and LED (Ages 6–10)

With a AA battery, a small LED bulb, and two lengths of copper wire, you can demonstrate the basics of electrical circuits in minutes. Connect the wires from the positive and negative ends of the battery to the two legs of the LED — it lights up. Disconnect one wire — it goes dark. This simple demonstration introduces the concept of a complete circuit, the role of conductors, and the relationship between current flow and illumination.

Activity 7: Rube Goldberg Machine Challenge (Ages 7–10)
